The genre of this book is a historical narrative. The theme of this book is; regardless of circumstances in life Israel can live in accordance with Gods will and ways. That genuine love requires sacrifice at times. If Israel seeks God and lives obediently in his will, overflowing blessings will follow. The key characters and event are as follows. This narrative begins during the time of famine and rebellion of the Israelites the time of no kings. The famine causes Naomi and her husband to move from their Israelite home, to the heathen country of Moab. In Moab her husband dies and she finds herself a single mother of two sons. Naomi sons go on to marry pagan women by the names of Orpah and Ruth. The story gets worse, both her sons then die. Naomi and her two daughters in laws are left to fend for themselves in a society that makes it very difficult for women to do so. Orpah returns to her family. Ruth out of love and devotion begs to stay with her mother-in-law. Ruth also accepts Naomi’s God the God of Israel as her own. Because of Ruth love and devotion and the acceptance of the God of Israel as her own, she is greatly rewarded. She marries a wealthy man name Boaz a true follower of the God of Israel. She then becomes the mother of Obed, the grandfather to King David. Ruth obedience brings her into the lineage of Jesus Christ.
