Study in the first and second book of kings

The first book of kings

The genre of this book is a historical narrative. The theme of this book is; the spiritual journey of Israelis kings and prophets. This book challenges all of God’s people to be faithful in devotion and service and keep away from anything that may take God’s place in their heart. The main characters and events are as follows: Solomon son of David. Starts his kingdom off as a pinnacle of Israel’s Glory. He is known in other parts of the world for his riches, glory and wisdom. These are all graciously provided by the one true God the God of Israel. During this book God appears to Solomon three times giving us a glimpse into his Solomon’s spiritual journey. The first time he appears to Solomon he gives him wisdom at young man’s request. The second time he warns that his success would depend on his spiritual fidelity. The third time God appears he rebukes Solomon, because he was lead into worshiping false Gods by his wives from different nations. Solomon had married them to create alliance with other nations and further his kingdom. He tried to increase his kingdom for his own glory not Gods. What it ultimately caused was the division of his kingdom of Israel after his death. At this time in his life his riches and power have went to his head. An example of this is Solomon spends seven years building a tabernacle for God and thirteen years building his own home. His failure in leadership has once again caused Israel to walk away from their covenant with God. Upon the death of Solomon, Israel was lead by a series of kings that were by the most part evil and idolatrous. At the end of first kings God once again tries to bring the Israelites back into a relationship with him. He sends the prophet Elijah to preach about how it wrong to worship the false God Baal. God put the false God Baal to the test on Mount Carmel using Elijah and wins. This causes the wicked king and queen at the time Ahab and Jezebel worshipers of Baal to put death threats on Elijah. Elijah ran away to the wilderness and hid exhausted and depressed. He begged God for death. God brought food and encouragement to the prophet and saved his life for future work. The one true God is the keeper of promises and his covenant with mankind will be carried out.

The book of second kings

The genre of this book is a historical narrative. The theme of this book is that there is one true God, the God of Israel. Israel must obey Gods laws and serve him only. By worshiping false Gods and having a lack of faithfulness, Israel brings tragedy upon itself and looses everything. This book reminds Gods people that being faithful to him and serving him brings his protection and blessings. Second kings, keeps an account of, how the kings of Israel refuse to keep their convent with God. The kings of Israel and the Israelites had turned to worshiping false Gods and are behaving in ways that are wicked in Gods Sight. God sends several of his prophets Elijah and Elisha to warn the people to return to their convent with him. A miracle happens in this book, the prophet Elijah is taken to heaven in a chariot. Elisha is chosen by God to be Elijah predecessor. This book begins the ministry of Elisha. God gave the power to Elisha to do many wonderful things he caused a dead child to live, made poisonous food safe, and Israel won battles without a fighting. These miracles were witnessed by Israel king Joram and Queen Jezebel. Despite witnessing these great miracles, they continued to worship false gods and behave wickedly. It also tells of a seven year old boy named Josiah who was saved by the priest Jehoida and became king. It is stated he was the greatest king that Judah ever had. He obeyed and followed Gods laws. He rebuilt the temple also during his reign. So God was kind to the nation of Judah during his reign. After Josiah’s rein all the kings of Judah were evil. God allowed the king of Babylon to attack Judah and it was destroyed along with the capital Jerusalem because of Israelites wicked ways.
