The study of Isaiah

Isaiah

This book has several genres to include speeches, parables, prophecies, hymns, and historical narratives. The theme of this book is the importance of repentance from sin and the hope of Gods deliverance in the future. That those who fail to submit and repent to the one true God and not trust or obey him will be judged. This book tells of the coming of the messiah, and that mankind can break free of the oppression of sin and turn to God for forgiveness and healing. That just having the appearance of righteousness is not good enough for God. God wants the whole heart of his chosen people. The key events and characters are as follows. The people of Judah are facing destruction by Assyria and Egypt after the death of their king. During this crisis of leadership God gave Isaiah a vision that started a forty year ministry preaching to the inhabitance of Judah. Isaiah preached to the people of Judah the importance of turning from sin, to stay away from idolatry, false Gods and surrender total trust to him. Judah went from times of rebellion to times of revival and repentance. When Judah repented and trusted god they were saved from destruction. This book tells us the creator alone can forgive us and restore us. That we should not be afraid, God is with his people. That God alone can bring true lasting inner peace. That heading Gods instruction we can have renewed strength in the lord day by day. Unfortunately God people again did not remain faithful to him. God allowed Babylon, Assyria successor to overcome them. Many people were forced into exile. What did this mean of God absolute reliability and faithfulness? How could he let this happen? Isaiah answers this question that God does punish sin. He could stop it, but he chose not to. That as promised he would preserve a remnant of the people of Israel by his grace alone, not their faithfulness. When they were allowed to return to the promise land out of exile, it had been taken over by pagans. Isaiah instructed them that God demanded their obedience, devotion and loyalty to him as the one true God. God has done as he had promised Israel forefathers and sustained his chosen people.
