The study of Obadiah

Obadiah

The Genre of the book is prophetic. The theme of this book is that; what wrong you do to another, will be done to you. That one must not gloat at another misfortune, they risk facing God judgement. That the wrongs done to your fellow man is cared about by God, and they will not go unpunished. That God will establish a universal kingdom that will rule over all the nations. You are your brother’s keeper. That evil will not triumph. “The lord himself will be King.” “The kingdom of God is near” (Mark 1:5; Luke 10:9-12; 21:31-33). The key characters and events are as follows. Obadiah the prophet sends a message to Edom from God. That God punishes his people, Edom better not gloat on their misfortune. The people of Edom may risk facing judgment themselves. Israel asks the Edomites for help from an enemy attack they refuse. They sit back prideful and gloat at the misfortune of the Israelites. The sin of pride brings a strong judgment from God. Edom is destroyed for their behavior. The book ends with a promise of deliverance, when the land will be restored and all Gods people will rule over it. This book has a powerful message that pride is sin and we must be willing to help others in time of need.
