The genre of this book is a historical narrative. The key theme of this book is the restoration of the people of Israel to their covenant through prayer, commitment and repentance. That God is a God of forgiveness, patience and mercy. That following God’s laws matter. That God is in control of what happens to Israel, no matter how bleak the circumstances look. That prayer has power. This book documents Israel return from Babylonian captivity. It also includes extensive genealogical records for the purpose of establishing the descendents of Aaron to the priesthood. The key characters and events are as follows. This narrative begins with Zerubbabel a Jew who was appointed governor by the King of Cyrus. King Cyrus declared that Jews captured and exiled in Persia could return to their homeland. Zerubbabel led the first Jews back to their homeland. Zerubbabel rebuilt of the temple of Jerusalem, but not without difficult from the local inhabitance. Then time passed and we them learn about the ministry of Ezra. Ezra prayer of confession moves the Israelites to repeat and return to God. This book also includes the important of Jewish people to marry others with their same religious beliefs. The reason given for this is to not be led astray by a nonbeliever.
