Daniel

The Genre of the book of Daniel is apocalyptic literature, prayers, wisdom literature and a bibliographic narrative. The key theme of this book Gods sovereignty is expressed in God’s final purpose for humanity and in all of creation. That he will establish his kingdom over the entire earth. The key characters and events are as follows. A young man named Daniel who was part of the Judah’s royal family and his friends were deported to Babylon after his hometown of Israel was taken over by King Nebuchadnezzar and lay in ruins. Through the hand of God Daniel and his friend were shown favor by King Nebuchadnezzar. He educated them and took them into his service. Then King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, God gave Daniel the ability to interpret. The dream was of a great statue and it represented the kingdoms that would rise in the future. The prideful king then made a great statue of himself and forces everyone to worship it. Daniel friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down to it. They were thrown into a furnace to be put to death. God spared their lives by not letting the fire touch them. The king is judged for his pride. The king finds error in his ways, and admits the sovereignty of God through witnessing Daniel and his friends Godly lives. Just when you think that Daniel is out of trouble the king son misuses item taken from the temple in Jerusalem. In response to it, God uses a disembodied hand and wrote words on the temple wall that only Daniel could interpret. It was a message of God coming judgment. Daniel is later thrown into a den of lions to die because he refuses to pray to the emperor. God sends an angle to shut the lion’s mouths. He is then given two more visions one of four beasts that represent the kingdom of Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. Then he has a vision involving a ram, a goat, and several horns. God sends an angle to Daniel to help explain his visions. God gave Daniel the precise timeline that the messiah would come. The Messiah would save mankind from death and the fiery pit of hell. The covenant that God made with Israel would be fulfilled.
