Advocating for orphans

One of the most important things to me in this life is family. I can't imagine what I would do without them. I am posting a letter I have written to my congressman about a law, that if repealed I believe could be detrimental to this very vulnerable population.

Dear, Congressman

As a concerned voter.I would like to bring to your attention a bill that is about to sunset at the end of 2011. The bill I am referring to is H.R 184 Adoption guarantee tax relief (The library of congress Thomas). The bill would provide tax relief to adoptive families of $13,170 per adoption. According to the department of children services, the average family spends between 11,000 and 35,000 dollars per adoption. This leaves adoption for many a non- economic reality, without this bill.

The adoption guarantee tax relief bill, in my professional opinion is necessary for the protection of one of our most vulnerable population’s orphaned children. In a time in our country when budget cuts are necessary for the economic survival of the country, I would like to assert that this bill could provide long term economic gains and decrease the overall economic cost of the United States. Countless scientific research has been conducted that indicates the importance of family on the development of a child (Guyer, 2007). Children in intuitions, group homes, and frequent foster home placements are deprived of the very fundamental experiences afforded by a family.

Children in families develop life long attachments who protect them socially, physically, economically and spiritually (Guyer, 2007). Institutions, temporary families, or group homes, cannot afford a child the same social context needed to provide the psychological attachment to caregivers. These attachments are necessary, for children to thrive emotionally and become productive members of society (Guyer, 2007). These lost children, if not given the opportunity for attachment, are most certain to develop mental health issues in the future that will put further economic strain on the prison systems, social security, mental health institutions, and health care (Bretherton). The short term funding of this bill using tax payers dollars, would save tax payers, millions in future expenders.

Bolby, a famous psychoanalyst, who developed theories on the significance of attachment in children, made this statement “if a community values its children it must cherish their parents” (Bretherton,p767). The Guarantee adoption tax relief bill allows adoption to be an economic reality for more citizens. The price of placing orphans in homes has more than just economic reality for our country; these children are future taxpayers, leaders, and voters. Without the protection that family affords these children, we put the future at stake. When this bill comes before congress in December, 2011, I would like you to please consider its significance to those who do not have a voice, the orphans of this country. As a health care professional, I believe passing this bill would benefit the country by decreasing, the long term financially burden of children, who do not develop strong attachments would place on the health care system.
