The main literary genre of the book of Joshua is a historical narrative. The theme of this book is; God fulfillment of his covenant promises to the patriarchs of the Bible. It also has a theme that through obedience and faithfulness, God allows the Israelites to enjoy the fulfillment of his generous promises for this generation and the ones to come. The key themes and characters are as follows. The book of Joshua is an account of his military campaigns and leadership into the promise land after being anointed by Moses at the end of Deuteronomy as the leader of Israel. The book of Joshua includes entering and conquering the promise land, Instruction for distributing the portions of the promise land and his Farwell speech. In the Farwell speech he again reminds Israel of the importance of keeping their covenant with God. Some other key characters in the book are Rahab a prostitute inn keeper in the land of Jericho. She hid two Israelite spies and protected them from the king of Jericho from certain death. She accepted the Israelite God as her God. As a reward she and her family’s life were spare when the Israelites claimed the land of Jericho for their own. Rahab and her sisters also received a piece of the Promised Land when it was divided. The Israelite Achan disobeyed god during one of the military campaigns and took a robe some silver coins and a gold bar. Because of his disobedience to Gods instruction he caused many of his fellow comrades to die in battle. Then there is Caleb an inspiring example of faith in God. At the age of 85 yrs old because of his confidence in the promises of God he went up against insurmountable obstacles and giants and won. This book is full of many miracles the stopping of the waters at the Jordan so the Israelites could pass and the falling of the walls of Jericho with not so much a battle to name a few. All are a testament that God keeps his promises. This is book is a testament to those who are faithful and obedient to God will reap his abundant blessings.
