The Genre of the book of Luke is a gospel and historic narrative. The key theme of this book is; Jesus is the Messiah promised in the Old Testament scripture.  That his death on the cross and resurrection were part of God plan to redeem all mankind. Through Jesus death on the cross he became the savior to the world gentiles and Jews. The key characters and events are as follows. The book was written by a physician that paid very particular attention to historical aspects and dates so as to assure his readers that this is a true historical account and assure them of the gospel message. This is an account of the early church and the fulfillment of Judaism through the person of Jesus. During this time more gentiles were coming into the church, while the Jews were rejecting Jesus and his good news. This book answers the question of who are the true people of God.  Luke addresses this by stating the messiah, Jesus is for all people who believe.  This book contains the story of the prodigal son a boy who left his father house with his inheritance and on bad terms, only to return to his father’s forgiving and accepting arms. The story of two women, Martha and Mary and their different ways of pleasing Jesus. One working very hard to please Jesus, by cooking and cleaning, and one sitting at his feet. Jesus tells them that he would rather them spend time listening to his teachings. We hear of the story of the Good Samaritan that helped someone that was his enemy and he was greatly blessed. The two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus that Jesus taught them his death was not a failure. This is a historical account of Jesus life the blameless son of God, and how he brought salvation to the entire world. Not with might or conquest but through giving his life for them.
