The study of the morality play Everyman

The play “Everyman is a work of secular literature that could be used to share the Gospel with non-believers. Through the anonymous author in the play “Everyman” the character Everyman is forced answer the question of death that is common to all mankind. How is one to face mortality? The character Everyman chose to give an account of his good works to provide evidence of his place in Heaven. This gives the perfect opportunity for the Christian to share their beliefs about Jesus Christ in a non -threatening manner. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Literature brings to light, the complicated questions of all mankind. The Christian has the answer to these questions in the Bible. Secular literature is the perfect opportunity to use something that comfortable to an individual to introduce the Gospel.

“Everyman” could be used as a teaching tool about salvation to the secular world. It is my assertion the play “Everyman” is teaching the means of salvation is justification by works. The Bible states” For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). The play “Everyman” is a great lesson on the sinful nature of mankind and his quest to make himself worthy of Heaven, which he is not capable. The means of salvation comes from the belief in Jesus Christ alone. When the audience of “Everyman” is faced with the question of death, this gives Christian’s the opportunity to share the Gospel with the non-believer. The point about losing friends when following Christ is something not talked about in the church enough and took great courage to address. All too often today’s preachers try to make everything upbeat and positive and a great deal of important information is not shared that could lead to spiritual growth.
