The focus
of health and wellness is the responsibility of every member of society. Each
individual person should take responsibility for their own health to the upmost
of their ability. This can only be accomplished in partnership with healthcare professionals,
governments and other members of the community. When one member of society is
ill it places an economic and social burden on all the members of a population
(Nash, & Pracilllo, 2011). Chronic illness is paid for out of tax dollars,
sick days, lost of talent given to the community and time and energy of
caregivers (McIntosh, 2011). The health burden of the United States belongs to
each and every citizen. The health of the world is greatly affected by each of
its members. By improving the overall health of the entire world everyone
health is improved. To have healthy societies, fresh water, healthful adequate
food, disposal of waste, fresh air and adequate housing, is essential must for
the continued survival and health of the entire world (Nash, & Pracilllo,
2011). The world through improved transportation, increased population and
technology are greatly impacted by the health practice of each other (McIntosh,
2011).
One of the greatest responsibilities
belongs to health care professionals (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011).
Members of the health care industry have the duty to share their unique
knowledge with the public. At this time communication between health care
services and professionals is extremely poor, based on current technology
(Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011). Furthermore 180,000 preventable deaths
are related to hospital errors annually
(Calhoun, 2006). In no other industry in the world would such a failure
rate be acceptable (Calhoun, 2006). Health care professionals are obligated by
the profession and the oaths they have taken to care for the public’s health.
The use and creation of tools to link health care professionals such as
pharmacist, doctor offices, hospitals, dentist, long-term care and home health
is vital part of creating a healthier society (Nash, & Pracilllo, 2011).
The leadership in health care has an obligation to society to implement and use
technology to its full potential.
The American associations of the college of nurses are leading the way in
education a generation of nurses on improving the quality and safety of health
care (American of association of college of nursing, 2014). The association is
leading a national effort to educate nurses on the tools and knowledge, to create
systems within the health care industry to promote safe, patient centered, cost
effective care (American of association of college of nursing, 2014). AACN are
creating ways to incorporate and educate graduate nurses through, workshops,
web seminars, developing quality and safety competences to be standardized in
all nursing programs. Areas of focus are patient centered care, team work and
collaboration, evidence –based practice, quality improvement, safety,
informatics, and call to action (American of association of college of nursing,
2014).
Christian
nurse have a duty to share their talent for nursing with the public. God gives
each one of his children, passions and talents while on this earth. God expects
that as Christians, we employ are gifts to contribute and advance his kingdom.
The gift of a college education and nursing can serve, God through improving
the health of his children. “For unto everyone that hath shall be given, and he
shall have abundance, but from he that hath not shall be taken away even that
which he hath (Mathew, 25:14 -30).
Society
is greatly influenced by the actions and beliefs of its members. The culture of
a society can be greatly influenced by each member. The behaviors, actions,
attitudes, are transmissible among social groups (Patterson, Maxfield,
McMillian & Switzler, 2011). The health belief model is one method that is
used to change the culture in order to change health beliefs through education
(Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011). It is important when educating about
health that cultural considerations are understood and part of the model to be effective
(Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011).
The health
and wellness of society begins in one of the corner stones of society, the
family (McIntosh, 2011). Behaviors patterns are established for a life time in
the few years a child spends at home (McIntosh, 2011). To improve population
health voters and government officials must pass laws that protect this
fundamental pillar in society. Due to inactivity, poor nutrition, inadequate
sleep and increased stress, doctors are diagnosing children with illness that
were once only thought a problem for the elderly (McIntosh, 2011). Research
demonstrates good health behaviors that are modeled and practiced by the family
are of the greatest influence to their children (McIntosh, 2011). The health of
the nation begins in the home and policy and laws must support the family as a
foundation of society.
A focus
on the quality and safety of health care for the population involves a change of
mindset, the change in current health practice and current health care design (Nash,
& Pracilllo, 2011). Current practice in medicine is the treatment of
disease (Nash, & Pracilllo, 2011). China has one of the highest rates of
longevity and their citizens remain free of disability as they advance in age
(Yang, 2006). Traditional Chinese medicine and culture was focused on
preventive medicine (Yang, 2006). The older generations of Chinese’s people
feel that it brings disgrace on them and others to have people accomplish tasks
they can do for themselves (Yang, 2006). One example is it is a recent trend to
have foot massages to promote health (Yang, 2006). This is a practice that is
mostly done by younger generations of Chinese (Yang, 2006). The older
generations believe that once you stop doing a task for yourself, you will lose
the ability (Yang, 2006). A Chinese proverb sums up the importance of diet in
the health of the country “He that takes medicine and neglects diet, waste the
skill of the physician” (Yang, 2006). The elderly were not considered a burden
as they aged but, an asset of wisdom to the family” (Yang, 2006). When the
Chinese started moving towards a more, Westernized approach to illness, acute
medical problems were improved but, but health over the lifespan was decreased”
(Yang, 2006). The elderly were being forgotten in long –term homes and due to
decrease physical activity and diet the youth had greater disability (Yang,
2006). To improve the populations
overall health a greater concentration must be placed on preventative medicine (Nash,
& Pracilllo, 2011).
Leadership in the health care industry must look to other businesses
that have successfully improved safety in their industry. One method that has
proven to successfully measure outcome in health care, is Six- Sigma (Calhoun, 2006).
Six-Sigma is a methodology that has proven successful at decreasing cost,
improving safety and eliminating waste throughout the business world (Calhoun,
2006). Six-Sigma is a systematic approach that evaluates practice to eliminate
defects in process and aims for near perfection of 99.9%, through the analysis
of data (Calhoun, 2006).
The
achievement of a safer, high quality, cost effective health care system will
require a multilevel approach, by the leaders in health care (Calhoun, 2006).
The health care industry will have to undergo organizational changes that
support more open communication and collaboration among it team members (Glembrocki,
Fitzapatrick, 2013). Health care industries are looking at design changes;
examples are Pathways and Magnet to improve education, quality, collaboration
and communication among nursing staff. The care provided will have to become
more patient and culturally centered, with an emphasis on patient education and
prevention of health complications (Glembrocki, Fitzapatrick, 2013). With the
increase use of technology, a greater need will be place on the relationship
with the patient so that the health care received is appropriate and safe
(Glembrocki, Fitzapatrick, 2013). This initiative is being addressed through
programs such as relationship base care (Glembrocki, Fitzapatrick, 2013). The health care teams of the future will
require greater, technical, communication, collaboration skills that ever
before in the history of medicine (Glembrocki, Fitzapatrick, 2013).
To
provide safe, affordable, available health care will require diligence and
accountability. Health is more than the absence of disease (Glembrocki,
Fitzapatrick, 2013). Health in society can be measured in the population by,
infant mortality rates, access to affordable health care, crime rates, clean
water supplies, sewage disposal, education scores, mental health availability,
management chronic disease, available transportation and number of communicable
disease to name a few (Nash, & Pracilllo, 2011). In hospitals safety
quality are being measure by the rates of hospital acquired infections, falls,
bedsores, sentinel events, customer surveys, and safety inspections (Nash,
& Pracilllo, 2011). Heath is a complicated subject that is not
easily measured. Health is also about the quality of life. Life without, God social
support, meaning, and love is just existence. The growth of knowledge about
health is growing at expediential rates. This will require great fortitude,
research, learning and perseverance, on the future leaders in health care and
the world to provide robust, safe place for the human race.
