Research indicates the
one area many mangers would choose over education or experience, is the ability
for subordinates to be able to control their emotions (Sy & Cote, 2004).
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, interpret and manage the
emotion of yourself and others (Sy & Cote, 2004). Through scientific
investigation research has discovered that many of the great leaders have had
high levels of emotional intelligence (Sy & Cote, 2004). Emotional
intelligence can be improved through coaching (Sy & Cote, 2004). Emotions
themselves are not wrong; it is what the individual does with them that make
the difference (Sy & Cote, 2004). Emotionally intelligent people take
emotions such as anxiety to solve difficult problems creatively (Sy & Cote,
2004). Improving emotional intelligence is an area that would benefit a
person’s entire life and could be greatly impacted with the encouragement of a coach.
A Christian coach has been given the Bible, an entire book of inspiration on
self –control and emotional intelligence. Encouraging journaling and reflection
to improve emotional intelligence is a very concrete way a coach could help a
client grow emotionally (Collins, 2009).
